History: The Department of Computer Science at Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, began as a Computer Science Unit under the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. The unit initially offered certificate courses and later the National Diploma (ND) programme.

In 2008, the unit was upgraded to a full department. Mr. Oladele O. Campbell (now Dr. Oladele Campbell) became the pioneer Head of Department (2008–2012). Under his leadership, the department secured full accreditation for the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer Science, laying the foundation for advanced computing education.

Since 1999, the department has graduated many sets of ND, HND, and PGD students. More recently, the first cohorts of the specialised HND tracks – Software & Web Development and Networking & Cloud Computing – have successfully graduated. Reaccreditation successes were recorded notably during the tenures of Dr. Ibrahim Kontagora and Mr. Isah Adamu Dagah.
